The short answer: European sunscreens are formulated with UV filters that are approved in the EU but not currently available in American over-the-counter sunscreens. Americans buy them from French online pharmacies using a package-forwarding address in France: the pharmacy delivers domestically, and the forwarder re-ships the haul to the US. Why the two shelves are different
This is the part most articles get wrong, so it's worth being precise.
In the United States, sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug. Any new UV filter has to clear the FDA's approval process before it can appear in a product sold on American shelves. That process has moved slowly: the American filter list has barely changed in decades, while European regulators approved several newer filters along the way.
In the European Union, sunscreen is regulated as a cosmetic. A filter that clears the EU's safety review reaches the shelf far sooner.
The result is not that one continent's sunscreen is "better" — American mineral sunscreens are excellent, and plenty of European formulas are unremarkable. The result is that some specific filters simply aren't in the American products, and those filters are the reason people go looking. They tend to deliver broad UVA coverage in textures that feel light rather than chalky, which is why the recommendations spread by word of mouth rather than advertising.
Regulation on both sides does change. If a particular filter matters to you, check the current ingredient list on the product itself rather than trusting an article — including this one.

Most people don't order one tube. Sunscreen is light, it keeps, and the shipping cost barely moves between one bottle and eight — so the usual pattern is a season's worth in a single box, often mixed with the rest of a French pharmacy haul.

Notice the shape of it: going from 1 kg to 2.5 kg adds $21, not $56. Transport is priced by band, so the marginal bottle is nearly free. That's the whole argument for consolidating — see your own price, no account needed.
One thing that cannot fly: aerosols
Spray sunscreens in pressurised aerosol cans cannot be shipped by air. This is not our rule; it is dangerous-goods regulation, and it applies to every carrier. If your basket contains an aerosol, it will be refused at our warehouse and we will tell you before it goes anywhere.
Fluids, creams, sticks and non-pressurised pump sprays are all fine. In practice this rules out very little — most of the French pharmacy sun range is fluid or cream. Our prohibited items page has the full list.

Questions people ask
Does the sunscreen survive the trip? Yes. It travels in a padded box in a temperature-controlled aircraft hold, the same way it reaches any European pharmacy. Sunscreen is stable at room temperature; it is the car dashboard in August you should worry about, not the plane.
How long does it take? The French pharmacy delivers to our warehouse in 2–4 days. Once you request shipping, Economy reaches the US in 2–5 business days and Express in 1–3. Order to door is typically a week to ten days.
Will I be charged duties on arrival? No. The price you are quoted already includes estimated US duties and taxes — that is what DDP means. Nothing is collected at your door.
